As you can imagine, I've been juggling quite a few things while preparing to leave for my trip to Southeast Asia. The last month (and almost a half now) definitely flew by even faster than I expected it to. I'll be taking off two weeks from today to fly across the world for four whole months. It's a scary, exhilarating, and exciting feeling. I've got so much to say and do and share… but for now, let's recap what happened in September.
What I was up to in September 2017:
Listening to All the Audiobooks
I was recently given a few free credits to Audiobooks.com and have been enjoying listening to some books that have been on my list for quite a while. I've had a hard time focusing enough to read much lately so listening to books really allows me to consume the content I am craving in a way that works for me. Am I the only one who is absolutely addicted to ingesting information? I swear… I can't get enough! Whether it's podcasts, books, articles, online videos, or movies… I am just kind of addicted to content. I guess you could say it's one of my passions. Have you ever taken your Strengths Finder test? It comes as no surprise to me that two of my top five strengths are Learning and Input. My addiction to consuming content is a perfect indicator of those traits. 😂
Two books I devoured in September were The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. I've been getting really into the power of positivity, mindfulness, and the law of attraction lately, and both of these books touched on these topics. This particular quote from Jen Sincero struck a chord with me…
Pretty powerful, right? I'll be sharing more about the inspirational content I've been chewing on in an upcoming blog post. This is stuff I've been really excited about lately and can't wait to share more about what I'm learning and discovering along the way.
I'm no fashion blogger, but I was invited to a few different shows and events this year. I have worked with RewardStyle for quite a number of years so it's always fun to celebrate fashion week with their company. Here I am with one of my Aisle Society sisters, Kunbi of Aisle Perfect, at the annual RewardStyle Fashion Week party. I felt like the least fashionable person there, but it was a great time nonetheless.
Martha Stewart slid into my DMs
I attended an event at the Martha Stewart offices to celebrate the launch of Martha's new collections on QVC. Of course, I had to share some event love on social, and the queen herself took notice and sent me a little ❤️ of acknowledgment. I nearly died… talk about a fangirl moment.
Gave myself some much-needed advice
I was honored to take part in yet another round of #TheImperfectBoss campaign hosted by Ashley Beaudin. A few times a year, female biz owners are asked to share some of their authentic life and biz struggles in the spirit of being more vulnerable and real about what it takes to run a creative business. I'm always happy to participate because if I'm being honest, I cannot deal with the fakey fake bullsh*t I see on Instagram.
To be honest, I'm sick of everything being overly styled and curated. I am craving real and messy and authentic and vulnerable and deep conversations. I'm over shallowness and pretty for the sake of pretty. I'm craving deep connections and loving the meaty conversations I've been having with the people in my life these days. I hope to continue down that path of being more open and honest with my struggles and what's going on in my life, especially as I embark on this (sure to be) life-changing journey!
Had tea with Jess Lively
I had the pleasure of grabbing some tea and a scone with the amazing Jess Lively while she was briefly in NYC last month. I met her for the first time a few years ago at Amber Housley Inspired where we were both speakers at the retreat. Soon after, she started her podcast, and I have enjoyed following her show ever since. I'm really into the topics she's been covering lately… so much so that I actually have a whole blog post planned for some of my favorite episodes of The Lively Show. Stay tuned for that! We had a really wonderful conversation and I so appreciated the chance to sit down with her face to face. MORE Face-time and less FaceTime, ya know what I'm saying? 📱
Wrote my Book
During most of the month of September, I had my head down in my laptop as I cranked out over 30,000 words for my upcoming book! I can't share much more about the details surrounding the book until it's live on Amazon, but suffice it to say, I am SO pumped about it! I'm so proud to be finally accomplishing this goal I've had on my list for so long. I recently had lunch with my editor (who just got engaged!! so perfect) who said that she had never received a book draft that was so thorough and complete. I kinda wanted to cry because hearing that after working so hard was super satisfying.
It was an aggressive timeline and I'm super proud of what I've put together. Now we're in the editing and layout stage… I can't wait to see how it all comes together! It should be available the first week of February, so mark your calendars… and be sure to pre-order copies for all the engaged ladies and gents in your life!
Been quite a busy bee
Between writing the book and preparing for my trip, September was super busy. I'm thinking through all the things I need to buy, pack, and prepare before I leave the country for four months. It's no simple thing! I am definitely feeling pretty scattered and like my mind is in a billion places at once. I've spent a good amount of time clearing out my office space and getting rid of excess junk. I'm generally trying to simplify wherever possible. I'm planning a post about the items that I'm bringing on my trip, as well as how I decided what to pack. So many fun and interesting things to share! I hope you'll get subscribed for updates via the box at the end of this post. *hint, hint*
PS– how cute is this darling little notebook from SMYTHSON? A sweet friend of mine sent it to me to take on my trip and record some of my adventures in. Bees have been ever-present in my life lately and I was super touched by the sentiment behind this gift. More on bees and the symbolism in an upcoming post! (I know… I'm promising quite a lot!)
The next two weeks of October are going to really fly by. I'm currently in LA, then I have a week back in NYC before I take off for Thailand. I really do plan to blog in (almost) real-time once I'm on the trip. Stay tuned for more regular updates where I'll be sharing my travel necessities, must-haves, tips, and recommendations along the way. My next monthly update will be coming to you from THAILAND! I can hardly believe it. Until then… be well!
